History

The Old Castle Inn is an 18th Century former cider house and inn, which as local rumour has it, was closed around 1920 due to pressure from the local farmers’ wives - apparently they were not happy that their men folk were consuming all their hard-earned wages in the Cider House!

Although not an inn or public house anymore, The Old Castle Inn maintains a wealth of character and charm.

The village of Clifford can boast its own (now ruined) Norman Castle, which can be easily viewed from the lane. The Normans built it as a defensive measure to counter marauding Welsh tribes. Latterly, it was owned by the family of “Fair” Rosamund de Clifford (the Rose of the World) who was the mistress of King Henry II. There is a shallow river crossing close to the castle at the foot of a steep bank, which once was a ford, hence the village name of Clifford.
